Recurrent Energy, a subsidiary of Canadian Solar Inc., has officially begun commercial operations at its 200 MWp Villameca solar photovoltaic project in the Castilla y León region of Spain. This development took place on October 15, 2026, and is set to significantly enhance the company’s renewable energy portfolio in Spain. The Villameca solar project is projected to generate approximately 359,172 MWh of clean electricity each year. This output will meet the electricity needs of over 100,000 homes, contributing to the country’s ongoing clean energy transition.

In addition to producing clean energy, the Villameca project is expected to avoid around 57,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually. This reduction is comparable to removing more than 12,000 internal combustion engine vehicles from the roads. The completion of this project marks a significant advancement for Recurrent Energy as it continues to expand its solar energy operations throughout Spain, following the recent opening of the 426 MWp Rey Solar project in Andalucía. Additionally, the 315 MWp Tordesillas project in Castilla y León is anticipated to connect to the grid later this year. With these projects, Recurrent Energy aims to reach a total operational solar capacity of approximately 1 GW in Spain by the end of 2026.

Dylan Marx, CEO of Recurrent Energy, noted that the start of commercial operations at Villameca represents a vital milestone for the company and reinforces its position in the European renewable energy market. He highlighted the company’s commitment to providing long-term value to local communities while maintaining high standards of social responsibility and biodiversity protection. The Villameca project has received the Union Española Fotovoltaica (UNEF) Seal of Excellence during its permitting and construction phases, reflecting its adherence to sustainability standards throughout development.

Through its Community CaRE programme, Recurrent Energy has actively supported local development initiatives, including enhancements to community facilities, educational improvements, and various social programs. Moreover, the project includes several biodiversity measures aimed at restoring habitats, planting native vegetation, and protecting local wildlife. These initiatives involve the installation of nesting structures, bat boxes, and insect hotels designed to strengthen local ecosystems.

Looking ahead, Recurrent Energy plans to incorporate battery energy storage systems into the Villameca project. This proposed hybridization is expected to improve grid stability and facilitate further decarbonization by integrating solar generation with energy storage solutions. Recurrent Energy has also announced the grid connection of Montalto La Viola, one of Italy’s first solar-plus-storage hybrid projects, underscoring the company’s ongoing commitment to expanding integrated renewable energy solutions across Europe.
